Happy Birthday To Me

Ok so this is a milestone for me; my 1 year anniversary. I've spend hours, days and even months trying to figure out how I could commemorate this occasion. In the end the idea just kind of hit me out of the blue. I wish I could say it was my intellect and imagination that inspired me but alas no, it was in fact a movie.

So with out further ado I present to you my thoughts on the magic that is movie moments. Now your probably sat there reading this thinking what is she babbling on about and what the heck is so special about movie moments.

Let me explain...

To me movie moments are those time where you find yourself doing something that just makes you smile. Its those instants that mimic those from cheesy 80's movies with that corny inspirational music in the background.

For me it can be something as simple as being sat on the deck reading a good book with the sun shining down. That's really all it takes because in that moment I can be blissfully happy. Everyone is different but no matter what it is that make that tell tale smile grace your lips you should embrace it. Grab hold of everyone of these moments and bask in them because it really is these moments that make life worth living.

Seriously!

They fucked with Pams face! Are you freaking kidding me. I know I'm not the only person who was screaming at her TV screen last night. Why would you mess with perfection. I know this is a great opportunity for Kristin Bauer to prove what a fantastic actress she is. Although most of us already know how fabulous she is but really did you have to mess with the face. Now am I going to get through the week. I must admit even though I hate what they've done to her I am looking forward to seeing how ruthless Pam will get, you know its going to happen. No chance the witches will get away with this she'll rip them apart.

Here's a photo to remind us what Pam is like in all her glory and hopefully will be restored to soon.

My Leading Lady

Phoebe Halliwell/Alyssa Milano

From the very first episode I loved Phoebe. Her rebellious nature and honest heart makes for a truely fascinating woman. She started out as a young girl who tended to shy away from responsibility but she grew into a mature and successful woman. As I watched her journey progress my affection for her grew, she had to deal with so much; from her evil husband and his demonic spawn to her lost loves and family. Yet she dealt with it all and moved on with her life, she refused to let it hold her back and showed her true strength. One of the things that first drew me to her was her willingness to embrace magic, unlike her sisters she was exciting by their transition into witchcraft. After all she was destined for something special.

My Weekly Addiction

Charmed

For a long time Charmed had been a dominant feature on my list of favourites. It got everything a girl could want in a show. Girls power, sisterhood, action, power, and of course a personal interest of mine; magic. Watching these sister witches battle evil week after week really has made me happy. That may sound silly but its true. A truly good show leaves you smiling regardless of the context. Another great aspect of the show is that you cant help but love each of the main characters. I of course adore Phoebe and Piper and I was gutted when Prue died because I really liked her but then Paige came along and I came to love her too. for a show to replace a beloved character with yet another wonderful one successfully is amazing. Perhaps one of the best things about this show is its ending. Now that may seem strange but when a show has to end you always hope it does it well. Unfortuanty this is rarely the case. In fact I think Charmed may be the only show where I've actually liked the ending. For them to tie up all the lose ends and give you a glimpse into the future of the character was the perfect ending to a wonderful show.

My Leading Lady

Shirley Schmidt/Candice Bergen

What can I say about Shirley Schmidt. Well she brilliant. She fought her way up that greasy pole and punched her way through that glass ceiling and she did it with her integrity in tact. Shes been kidnapped, had a knife held to her throat, put up with Denny Crane and survived it all. Now that’s impressive.

Boston Legal

I love this show. that’s all there is to it. From the very first episode I fell in love with this show. I was instantly drawn in by the fast talk and wit that these lawyers just ooze. They manage to fight against these big bads of the world and they do it with such a flair you can’t help but love them. Each one is quirky in their own way but damn are they loyal to one another. Their a family, if you take on one you take on them all. What’s wonderful about this show is that it makes you laugh, but while your laughing your also think about these issues that are integrated deep into the society we live in. It takes a truly great show to do that. The writers are geniuses, its as simple as that.

My Leading Lady

Buffy Summers/Sarah Michelle Geller

I couldn’t really choose anyone else now could I. Don’t get me wrong I love pretty much everyone in this show. Willow, Faith, Tara. I really wanted to pick Willow. She’s cute + a witch + gay = AWESOME. But Buffy is… well she’s Buffy. She kicks ass on a daily basis and does it while battling her way through her complicate social and romantic life. She’s young, hot and can wield sarcasm almost as well as she can a wooden stake. She may looks fragile but you really wouldn’t want to mess with her.

My Weekly Addiction

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

I’ve mention my love of all things vampire a couple of times before I believe. Of course I consider my self a true vampire fan not a twilight junkie. Don’t get me wrong I like twilight but a I was a fan of the fang long before glittering vampires entered the scene. One of my first flings with the vampires was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I personally think it’s a pretty good place to start. Admittedly the show revolves around killing the vampires because there the bad guys which is a tad different to what I normally go for but it still kicks ass. Besides it has Angel and Spike who are basically good guys, even if there are a few bumps along the road. We get to see a group of teenage friends band together to fight all thing evil. I can’t tell you the number of times my mind wandered during class to how much more interesting it would be to fight vampires than to sit through long division. The show managed to blend the humorous and romantic with the dark and twisty. The balance between the two opposite made for a great viewing opportunity. I also feel the musical episode deserves a special mention. It was utterly ridiculous in and stupendously fantastic way. It may have been a bit odd but damn once those songs are in your head they fight like hell to stay there.

I’ve got a theory…
…it could be bunnies…

Wednesday 22 June 2011

My Leading Lady

Henrietta 'Hetty' Lange/Linda Hunt

Ok its impossible not to love this woman. Hetty kicks some serious ass. She might be small but I wouldn't want to mess with her. Its so fun to watch this tiny woman ordering about these big burly men with such ease. But what's really great is that you can see how much the entire team respects and looks up to her. That is what makes a truly great leader.

My Weekly Addiction

NCIS: Los Angeles

I was introduced to this by the same friend as NCIS. Of course it was inevitable really that I would follow on from NCIS with it sequel. At first I thought it cant possible be as good as the original. Luckily I was wrong. NCIS:LA manages to create a unique version if what is a hit show. It combines the same team mentality but with a completely new setting as well as its own approach. The team members once again each have their own unique dimensions. Some more complicated than other, but they all gel together perfectly.

Wednesday 15 June 2011

My Leading Lady

Cate Hennessy/Katey Sagal

Ok so this is sort of a rare occasion: an actress has made her second Leading Lady feature. But really its not that surprising since the woman is Katey Sagal. In this show we get to see another side of the multitalented Katey. In 8 simple rules we get to once again see the loving mother aspect only with less guns. This time we watch a mothers development from a loving wife to a grieving widow and eventually to a woman in search of love. Her journey is vast considering the short life of the show. The character of Kate is almost complex in her simplicity. If that makes sense. What I mean is she is like so many women out there; she works, raises a family and just lives a normal life. But of course no two people are the same and you get to see her own unique way of dealing with the normal routine of life. An added bonus is we get to see Katey reflex her vocal muscles a couple of times, one episode even features one of Katey’s original songs. I want to reaffirm a simple truth: Katey Sagal rocks!

My Weekly Addiction

8 Simple Rules

I grew up watching shows like 8 simple rules. But it’s not just when I was younger I watched the show I love to watch it now. I have always loved watching this tight-knit family interact with each other and the world around them. Even through it wasn’t the same after the death of Paul (John Ritter) the show still managed to carry on, successfully too. It held on to many of the aspects of what made it great. The characters you care about and their everyday life to which you could relate. The storyline are great in the sense that they’re everyday occurrences that we all could easily experience, rather than being filled with explosive drama it allows you to focus on the people involved. I wish the show had continued; it had so much potential. However I understand that all good things must come to an end.

Wednesday 8 June 2011

My Leading Lady

Melanie Moretti/Valerie Bertinelle

One of the things I love about this show is that it has four great strong characters, so when I came to picking my favourite it was a difficult choice. But when it came down to it I couldn't help but go with Melanie. She has this innocence about her that is so endearing. Sometimes she comes across as naive but really its just her faith in the world and the people living in it. Its quite cute and refreshing to see a character who has lived their life in the real world and yet managed to not become jaded. I also admire the strength of the friendship she has with Joy and Victoria and the developing relationship with Elsa. She's such a sweet person you can;t help but love her.

My Weekly Addiction

Hot In Cleveland

I figured this was an appropriate show to follow on from last weeks addiction. Hot in Cleaveland is so similar in many aspects to Golden Girls but with a more modern twist. Its just as entertaining, providing us with a much needed fix. HIC once again features the lives of four women who live in the same house all of them once again are more mature but still utterly fabulous. I find the show to be a refreshing take on an old classic that is completely by the fact that it once again features Betty White. Proving she truly is a legend. Its fun to watch these women adapt to a life so different from their old one is judgemental L.A. Overall the show passes with flying colours.

My Leading Lady

Blanche Devereaux/Rue McClanahan

To be honest when it came to choosing which of the girls was my favourite it took a while for me to decide. I love them all. But for me one in particular stood out; Blanche Deverux. The Southern belle struck a chord in me, she’s so free and completely content with herself which is something I admire. She’s not afraid to do what she want regardless of what people think. She’s has the best qualities of all the girls and is endlessly entertaining.

Golden Girls

Golden Girls finished long before I came to discover it. In fact I think it ended before I was even born. But that didn’t stop it from becoming one of my favourite shows of all time. There are so many things I love about this show, one of the key ones been how refreshing it is to see a whole main cast made up entirely of female characters. Not only that but women over the age of 50. It redefined the genre of comedy for me. Each character has their own unique quality that make for laugh out loud comedy. Rose with her general ditziness and St Olaf stories, Blanche with her somewhat sordid romantic life, Dorothy and her sharp sarcastic wit and of course Sophia whose motherly influence over the other girls provides endless comic situations. Another great aspect of this show is that it has so much more depth than appears at first glance. Its ability to handle several tough issues and emotional storyline, combines seamlessly with the comedy. The entire show is a winning combination.

Wednesday 25 May 2011

My Leading Lady

Morticia Frump Addams/Carolyn Jones

There was really only one woman who could qualify for Leading Lady. The one and only Morticia Addams. With her long black hair and flowing dress she’s a gothic vision. She oozes class, despite her somewhat unusual interests and appearance. She’s a woman of many talents who somehow manages to always get what she wants. However she has a very warm heart and frequently shows a great deal of kindness to complete strangers. Her kindness isn’t always received as well as it was intended, in fact sometimes it merely frightens the recipient. However she always make for interesting viewing. Of course she’s rather intimidating. After all if you cross her, her plants will eat you.

Monday 23 May 2011

My Weekly Addiction

The Addams Family

I’ve decided that my theme for the week is Black and White. In accordance with my theme my addiction of the week is the Addams Family the original black and white version of course. Its my favourite although I love them all, the shows and the films. I think the fact that its in black and white helps to set it apart from the others. It helps add to the whole quirky and slightly creepy feeling of the show. I love the whole concept of the show. I’ve always been a fan of the freaky and gothic which the Addams family are whole heartedly. I’m actually finding it difficult to find the words to describe what exactly it is I love about the show, I just do. The concept on a whole is brilliant and the individual episodes each have their own magic.

Wednesday 18 May 2011

My Leading Lady

Irina Derevko/Lena Olin

My choice might seem strange since Sydney’s mother does not feature frequently except in the second season, however her character has always fascinated me the most. Irina Derevko/Laura Brisow is one of the most complex personalities I’ve come across. I am usually quite could at predicting the intentions of a character but Irina always managed to keep me guessing. You can never truly tell where her loyalties lie. With her family who I honestly believe she loves or to her “job”; if you can call it that, I’m not quite sure what the definition is for what she does. She keeps you guessing right until the end. I think I’ve probably said this before but I have a weakness for wild women and you don’t get much more wild than an assassin.

My Weekly Addiction

Alias

OK so it can’t exactly be said that I’m difficult to please when it comes to shows, in fact I guess you could say I’m positively easy. However occasionally there is a show the surpasses all my expectations. Alias is one of those shows. I can blame a friend of mine for this particular addiction. I’ve always been a bit of a thrill junky, just give me some guns and hot women and I’m in. Of course Alias ticks both these boxes but it is so much more than that. You find yourself enthralled in the lives of the character, desperate for the bad guys to get what they deserve and the good guys to defeat them. One of the things I love the most about this show is the relationships that Sydney has with all those around her. Its unusual for a character of this type to make strong connections but Sydney breaks that particular mould. Of course her complex spyfam is particularly fascinating to watch as well as her romantic affair with Michael. Overall the whole show is an excellent mixture of action, love and drama.

Wednesday 11 May 2011

My Leading Lady

Lily Aldrin/Alyson Hannigan

When it came to choosing my favourite leading lady it was a difficult choice. I love both Robin and Lily. But it when it came down to it I had to side with Lily. There’s something about her that just makes me smile. She’s quirky and gives just as good as she gets. I also can’t help but find her relationship with her husband; . They’re so sweet together and the devotion they have to one another is admirable. Of course it helps that she’s a redhead.

My Weekly Addiction

How I Met Your Mother

I must admit I’ve never been an avid watcher of How I Met Your Mother but recently I’ve been catching a few episode and I’m beginning to understand what the fuss is all about. Now there are plenty of sitcoms out there about a group of friends. But HIMYM does have its own unique take on the genre. Its interesting to see these diverse group of friends interact. The happily married couple, the eternal womaniser, the sweet guy who wants to settle down and the somewhat unlucky Canadian. Each is at a different stage in their life and yet the dynamic of their group is somehow balanced. Another unique feature of the show is that your eternal waiting for the ultimate revelation. Just how did Ted meet the children’s mother?

Wednesday 4 May 2011

My Leading Lady

Penny/ Kaley Cuoco

Okay I’m just going to say it, I love Penny. She actually reminds me of a beautiful version of myself, I was always that girl, the one who hangs out with the geeky boys. She doesn’t see them the way the rest of the world does, all she cares about is that they are great friends. That’s not to say she’s against making fun of them, because that’s what a good friendship relies on the ability to laugh at one another. She’s so nice and stunning to go with it. A great combination.

Monday 2 May 2011

My Weekly Addiction

The Big Bang Theory

I’m going through a comedy phase and was lucky to come across this show. Really its perfect for me it lets me embrace my inner geek. Watching them get so excited about comic books seems so natural to me. Its so funny to watch these somewhat socially awkward guys as they stumble through their life. Of course the most interesting aspect of this show is their budding friendship with the girl next store; Penny. She’s the complete opposite of the science-obsessed boys and yet their friendship works so well.

Wednesday 27 April 2011

My Leading Lady

Dr Mary Albright/Jane Curtin

In typical me style I pick the one human character as my favourite, I always like the outsider. I think the fact that she is different to the other is what makes her so great. She’s the one sane person who somehow ends up tangled in the middle of this chaotic family. Its so fun to watch her loosen up and start to embrace her fun side.

Monday 25 April 2011

My Weekly Addiction

3rd Rock From The Sun

If I was asked directly I honestly don’t think I could explain what it is about this show I like, for some reason it just works. Its characters and overall plot line are bordering on ridiculous. But sometimes that’s what it takes to make a great show. Something that’s silly and fun and makes you smile and that’s exactly what the show achieves. A family of aliens attempting to integrate themselves into the human community, its not exactly a smooth journey but that’s what makes it such a joy to watch.

Wednesday 20 April 2011

My Leading Lady

Rachel Green/Jennifer Aniston

From the beginning Rachel was always my favourite character. Im not sure what it is about her that I find so appealing. I do know that I think she’s beautiful and out of all the friends she is the one changed the most over the 10 years. Her journey took her from a selfish rich girl to a caring friend and mother. Perhaps its that which makes he stand out. The fact that she we got to see so many aspects of her personality.

Friends

I can’t believe its taken me this long to get around to Friends. it’s a timeless classic that’s great no matter how old you are or what mood your in. Its one of the shows I grew up watching, and will probably continue to watch for many years to come. This group of individuals has the kind of friendship we all want. They each have their own lives but no matter what they’re always there for one another. What so great about Friends is that there is at least one aspect of a character that everyone can relate to. I know me and my friends aren’t the only ones who each had a friends we were paired with. Its impossible not to become attached to them as you watch their lives progress, jobs, marriages and babies. We were with them every step of the way.

I also wanted to include this photo just because I love it.

Wednesday 13 April 2011

My Leading Lady

Cybill Sherridan/Cybill Shepherd & Maryann Thrope/Christine Baranski

When it came to choosing my Leading lady I found it was impossible to choose between the two friends, in my opinion they complete one another, one without the other just isn’t quite the same. So I decided they both deserve a mention. In many aspects they are polar opposites; Maryanne is a rich high-society lady of leisure while Cybill is an out of work actress. Lets not forget their contrasting taste in fashion. Maryanne’s sense of style us classy and bold while Cybill’s… I think eclectic is probably the most appropriate word. Yet in other ways they are so similar. There devotion to one another is admirable as is their love of vodka.

Monday 11 April 2011

My Weekly Addiction

Cybill

From the first time I watched this show it became one of my favourites. Any show that can literally make me laugh out loud earns my respect. This show is rare in its feminist attitudes. That’s probably what I like about it. Each of that characters is unique in their personality and yet the meld together so well, lead by the lead Cybill, One of the relationships I like the most in the show is the friendship between Cybill and her rich, slightly crazy friend Maryanne. Their crazy antics make for fantastic viewing.

Wednesday 6 April 2011

My Leading Lady

Barbara 'Barb' Baran/Wanda Skyes

It was inevitable really which character would make the final cut. Barb is one of a kind, her sharp sarcastic wit make her a comic star, and her devoted and honest friendship with Christine really helps make the show work. Of course the added bonus is that the actress who plays her is the one and only Wanda Sykes. That alone should be enough for you to worship her.

The New Adventures Of Old Christine

I only recently discovered this show and it didn’t take long for me to get hooked. You know you should but you cant help but adore the self-obsessed quirky Old Christine. Factor in the very dysfunctional family and you’ve got a laugh out loud show. It’s a fresh take on comedy which isn’t afraid to hit marks that other shows shy away from. It also managed to show new dimensions when it comes to age old relationships; the best friends, ex husband and even his new girlfriend. It also works together perfectly.

My 100th Post

This is my 100th post. I’ve spent a long time trying to figure out how I can mark this occasion.

What did I come up with?

Absolutely nothing. :)

So instead I’m just going to say…

Woohoo!

Thursday 24 March 2011

In Memory Of...

Elizabeth Taylor
27/02/1932 - 23/03/2011

There is so much that could be said about the wonderful woman that was Elizabeth Taylor. She was extraordinarily talented and breathtakingly beautiful. A performer for over 65 years she made a significant impact on the world of acting and will be forever remembered for her performances in films such as Cleopatra and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof just to name a couple. When she left this world it lost a little bit of its sparkle. She will be eternally missed.

Rest In Peace

Wednesday 23 March 2011

My Leading Lady

Evelyn Harper/Holland Taylor

One of the redeeming features of the show has got to be without a doubt Evelyn; with her extreme sarcasm and sharp wit she is truly brilliant. She always looks smart and elegant in her twin sets and brooches but don't let that lull you into a false sense of security with one word or look she can rip you to shreds and smile sweetly at the same time. She’s a masterpiece that should not be altered in anyway.

My Weekly Addiction

Two and A Half Men

I know it’s the kind of show I should avoid and hate. But I’ve got to admit that its one of my many guilty pleasures. I try to ignore the sexist male chauvinist attitudes and focus more on the humour, which admittedly isn’t that difficult. It’s one of those shows that has a habit of making me smile. I’ve also enjoyed watching little Jake grow from a cute little boy into a gangly teenagers and of course the clashes between the completely opposite brothers Charlie and Alan. I’ve gotta admit I also don’t happen to mind the continuous stream of hot (and often semi-naked) women who make an appearance. Bonus points are achieved for having Kristin Bauer in black lingerie in the pilot episode. I personally think that's the best way to start a show.

Saturday 19 March 2011

It took me long enough but...

... I finally did it. I made my first fanvid. Of course there was only one woman it could be about and that is the kick-ass Gemma Teller played by Katey Sagal.
Let me know what you think.

Fangtabulous: Part 2

I figured after expressing my love for fangs I should introduce you to some of my favourite female vamps...

First up is my favourite bloodsucker the utterly fabulous Pam Ravenscroft. She can glamour me any time.

Ok so this isn't strictly a female vamp so much as a town full of them but really who am I to complain Morganville certainly has a unique charm.

Now sparkly vampires may not be my ultimate favourite but I guess I can make a couple of exceptions but which should I choose the Vixen Victoria or the Elegant Esme

Now I saved buffy for last she eased me into the world of vampires and even though she tried to rid the world of them a part of me still loves her.

So many vampires so little blood...

Monday 14 March 2011

Fangtabulous

Okay so this week I've chosen to dedicate
my posts to Vampires. Now I know the
instant response may be Oh God not
another fang-banging, twilight groupie but
fear not I'm what I like to think I'm not a
fad fan but a true one. My first taste of the
fanged friends/foes came when a family
friends lent me the Buffy dvds. Lets just
say it was a downward spiral from there. I
must admit I did get caught up in the
Twilight Phenomena but as I said my love
for the fanged was around long before
Edward and Bella and I've found my tastes
tend to lean towards the more dark and
twisty antics of the True Blood vamps, trashy
they may be but damn they have one hell
of an appeal. Then again it fits right in with
my taste for tats and leather and all things
dark. Not that I'm morbid but each to their
own right. Whether they be on the big screen,
small screen or in the pages of a book I love
a good fang fix.

My Leading Lady

Lois Lane/Erica Durance

Now Lois Lane is my kind of girl, she got brains, looks and can kick some serious ass. Being raised as an army brat she developed a tough outer shell but that doesn't mean she doesn't have a gooey centre, although she would fiercely deny it she cares. During the course of seasons I'm watching at the moment, Lois has began to really shine, its clear that she's in her element at the Daily Planet.

However I certainly wouldn't complain if her role in volved a bit more of this...

And of course a bit of this...

My Weekly Addiction

Smallville

Now I started watching Smallville a long time ago, somehow along the way my interest swayed and it dropped off my radar after the season 6 finale. Luckily for me I my friend happened to have the 3 latest seasons on dvd and she insisted I watch them of course I didn't really take much persuading. So far I'm only part way through season 8 but it didn't take long for me to remember what it was I loved about the show in the first place. I've always been a bit of a comic geek, in fact I still am so superman has of course always been an interest of mine, despite the whole man rescuing damsel in distress theme that seems to be a common occurrence. I already own Lois and Clark on dvd so I certainly reveled in the opportunity to see the prequel, so to speak. Lets face it, everyone loves a superhero and I'm no exception. It may be dramatic and somewhat convenient but its also creative and enthralling. It just works.

Thursday 3 March 2011

Utterly fabulous.

That's what I would love my life to be. By that I don't mean all glamorous and flashy, I'm certainly not one of these people who craves stardom. I mean I want to enjoy a life filled with those moments that make you happy to be alive. The simple things that cause a smile to grace your lips. Whether that means riding a horse through an orchard with the sun shining down on you or sharing a tender kiss with the person you love. Of course I'm not going to deny that few of these moments may include pretty, shiny things but mainly they're more modest. While my life so far hasn't been exactly brimming with these special moments, I fully intend for them to feature prominently in my future. My plan, well its not really a plan so much as an intention. I want to focus on the positives, I refuse to allow the mundane aspects of life to stop me experiencing the desirable ones. You may be wondering what made me embark on this random soul searching speech, or you might not care in the slightest but I'll explain all the same. This week I told my boss and colleges I was leaving so that I could fulfil one of my long term dreams, visiting Canada. Although I utterly adore my job I came to realise that I can't let it hold me back. I'm embracing my destiny, so to speak, admittedly its one of my own creation but I think it still qualifies. I think you should all to do the same.

Go on I dare you.

Wednesday 23 February 2011

My Leading Lady

Alexis Colby Carrington/Joan Collins

Come on it was inevitable right. I'm a sucker when it come to women with attitude and Alexis is the queen bitch. She's a woman who doesn't let anything or anyone get in her way while she's scratching and slapping her way to the top. And she does it all while wearing a collection of utterly fabulous ensembles. Its hard to fond the words to explain why I love her but that's probably because there are no words necessary I mean its Alexis Colby Carringinton for heavens sake what more of of an explanation do you need.

My Weekly Addiction

Dynasty

There is no show on earth like Dynasty, son't get me wrong many have tried and several failed to create a show that can balance the right amount of general cheesiness and diva attitude in the way that Dynasty did. Even though it had been and gone before I was even born, its impossible for me not to discover and subsequently become a dedicated viewer of this gem of a show. I guess its kind of like Marmite; you either love it or hate it. I fall into the love category. So bad its good and so bitchy its fabulous. High octane drama at its best or worst depends who your talking to. It definitely deserves a place on my addiction list.
